My top 4 tips
Choosing a personal branding photographer can be a daunting task. I mean, this person needs to "get you" and your business; all while making you feel comfortable and kick-arse in front of the camera. Am I right?
With so many photographers out there all offering different services, it can be hard to know where to start. But, by following some simple steps, you can find a photographer that suits your needs and helps you create a successful (stunning, vivacious, visually magnetic) personal brand.
1. The first step to choosing a personal branding photographer is to research the photographers in your area. Look for photographers who specialize in personal branding photos and have a portfolio that reflects the look and feel you’re going for. No, someone who does weddings or family photography is not necessarily great at personal branding. Ask to see their work if they don't have much on their website and read reviews online to get a good idea of the quality of their work.
2. Next, think about the budget you have for hiring a photographer. Personal branding photography can be an investment, but it’s worth investing in a good photographer who can capture your brand in the best possible way. You can't compete with the leaders in your field if you have subpar imagery. Don’t be afraid to shop around and get quotes from different photographers before making a decision. However, remember the old adage, you get what you pay for. This is usually quite true when it comes to photographers. People just starting out and building their folios will charge less, but will also give you images that will have less impact in your marketing. Are you really saving if you need to do another shoot again in a few months because you don't like your images?
3. Once you’ve narrowed down your list of photographers, it’s time to get in touch with them. Ask to see examples of their work and ask questions about their experience and process. Make sure you have a clear understanding of the services they offer and what the final product will look like. Also, ask about their packages not only the cost of these packages, but also how long you will be shooting for and how many images you will receive, can you have outfit changes, will the images be edited and if so will it be consistent with the work on their website? This way you know what you’re getting for your money.
- Are they asking you the right questions to get to know your brand?
- Do they offer locations that will suit your brand?
- Does it look like they just shoot headshots or is there detail images in their folio that tell the story of a business?
- How do you feel talking to them? Do they make you feel relaxed and confident in their skills?
4. Finally, be sure to get a contract with the photographer before the shoot. This contract should outline the services the photographer will provide, the total cost of the shoot, and any other expectations you have for the shoot.
By doing your research and taking the time to find the right photographer for your personal branding needs, you’ll be able to create a successful and memorable personal brand with images that WOW and that accurately reflects your unique personality.
